I don't quite know why I am so drawn to photographing birds. To be sure, birds are beautiful. Their details are so elusive, except when seen up close. Birds rarely let us approach them. But photography — an entirely benign imposition on the life of the bird — can capture those details. And make them shine. Like a hunter who displays the heads of animals on the wall, I get to show off these remarkable flying creatures without harming even a feather.
