I have always been moved by New York City's resolve to transcend the devastation of 9/11 through the memorial at Ground Zero and the affirmation of life in the magnificent design and beauty of the Oculus. Built upon the ruins of lower Manhattan's World Trade Center, these monuments pay tribute to the victims of that horrible day in 2001 as well as offer a space to celebrate and affirm all that New York City represents: a hub for commerce and discovery. On the verge of the holiday season, these spaces offer New Yorkers and its visitors a most precious gift. Hope.
