I have always had a thing for the American flag. No doubt it is rooted in patriotism, in a love for America. This fealty was instilled in me by my parents. My dad was a veteran of World War II; my mom was a member of the DAR (a direct-descendent of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, the famous romance of the Mayflower).
For all that is wrong with America, and there is much that is in desperate need of repair, there is still so much that is right. And maybe more than anything else, at least for me, America symbolizes Hope. And the flag, the Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, however you call it, embodies that promise of hope. There's just something about the flag, its colorful boldness, and particularly the way in which it interacts with light, that I find inspiring.
So when I'm out and about and with my camera, I am invariably drawn to the flag. Especially the creative ways people display it.
